It is important to know that Henry Lyte was not a mere translator or amateur naturalist when he translated into English de L’Ecluse’s French version of Dodoens’ Cruydeboeck. He was certainly in touch with Dodoens and it is likely that Dodoens supplied extra materials to be incorporated into A Niewe Herball. It has been speculated that A Niewe Herball supplied Shakespeare with much of the plant lore used in his plays and poetry and that Spencer was also influenced by the lyrical nature of Lyte’s writing.
"Lyke as the Swanne doth chaunt his tunes in signe of joyfull mynde.
So Lyte by learning shewes himself to Prince and Countrie kynde."
