A man of many talents, John Hill’s diverse interests led him to write on politics, science, fiction and opera. He won many awards of recognition, but none so important to him than the knighthood that gave him the distinction of being Sir John Hill. Hill was a champion for the adoption of Carolus Linneaus’ system of plant classification while bending the system to suit his own interpretation. In his Preface to The Family Herbal, Hill gives an eloquent view on the usefulness of botany and his hope that the book in its size and language would be a helpful guide; a rhetorical rebuke of the "largeness" of most contemporary herbals.
