Author Note
One of the most famous herbalists of the 16th century, Pietro Mattioli was originally intended to the law by his father, but changed to medicine. His mission was to make the name of Dioscorides, a first century Greek physician, pharmacologist and botanist, known throughout Europe. Most of Mattioli’s publications were workings and reworkings of the writings of Dioscorides to the point that it became somewhat of an obsession. In pursuing his goal to become the supreme authority on Dioscorides, Mattioli became intolerant of those who disagreed with him. As personal physician to the Holy Roman Emperor Ferdinand I and his son Maximillian, Mattioli’s power was significant and his wrath leveled several medical careers. It has been suggested that many were relieved when word came from Trent in 1577 that Mattioli had died from the Plague.
